TV Remote controlled home appliance circuit

This is one of the popular EFY circuit. i build this one very easily. The circuit consists of very less components and simple in design.

Connect this circuit to any of your home appliances (lamp, fan, radio, etc) to make the appliance turn on/off from a TV, VCD or DVD remote control. The circuit cane activated from up to 10 metres. The 38kHz infrared (IR) rays generated by the remote control are received by IR receiver module TSOP1738 of the circuit. Pin 1 of TSOP1738 is connected to ground, pin 2 is connected to the power supply through resistor R5 and the output is taken from pin 3. The output signal is amplified by transistor T1 (BC558).
The amplified signal is fed to clock pin 14 of decade counter IC CD4017 (IC1). Pin 8 of IC1 is grounded, pin 16 is connected to Vcc and pin 3 is connected to LED1 (red), which glows to indicate that the appliance is ‘off.’ The output of IC1 is taken from its pin 2. LED2 (green) connected to pin 2 is used to indicate the ‘on’ state of the appliance. Transistor T2 (BC548) connected to pin 2 of IC1 drives relay RL1. Diode 1N4007 (D1) acts as a freewheeling diode. The appliance to be controlled is connected between the pole of the relay and neutral terminal of mains. It gets connected to live terminal of AC mains via normally opened (N/O) contact when the relay energises. you can use any NPN transistor inplace of BC548. You can also use SL100 or any NPN transistor lying around you.

The delay depends on the C1 capacitor. Using higher value capacitor will create more delay and using less value capacitor will switch the circuit more than 2 times when you press a remote. Analyse the circuit by placing the 10uf capacitor in place of C1 (100uf).

personally I faced many problems using relay for the first time. A detailed explanation regarding relays can be found here..

If you face any problems soldering this circuit, post here. This is simple than the previous version of this type of this circuit. The

Harshita: sir, "U" and "UR circuit" is "THE BEST". its 100% working now.

@Harshita

Thanks!

Harshita:sir, i want to know that why this ckt and most of the appliance work only at 36khz not below or above it.

arifuddin said...

@Harshita

I got this doubt the first time I started working with TSOP1738. Experiments have suggested that IR rays have maximum efficiency ( in directivity, power, etc) in different characteristics at that frequency. Refer the datasheet of TSOP1738. You will have statistical graph analysis there. At 36-40Khz, you will find the difference.

i have paper presentation sir .i am intrest in TV remotes.can u help in making of that paper .i do not know about how to make or work.if u give me some help please sir .i am also ece student studying in kavali pbr vits

arifuddin said...

@ Leelaram

I am very busy right now with my hectic schedule. The idea of giving paper presentation on TV remotes is good. but you can extend the topic by presenting your paper in Infrared Remotes(TV,DVD,Universal,etc). Concentrate on various techniques used in building remotes and importance of using IR Technology.

i really like this project but i have difficulty in finding some of the components which are used in this project on ISIS so if u can tell me details of the components used ...
thx

hi......
any one help me to design this remote controlled home appliance circuit for 14 or 18 channel.......
If now than give me reply on kkpatel@hotmail.co.uk

thank you,

Sir can you suggest a proper relay 4 this perpous.Plz send me a part no of relay which is required for that

Swarnali said...

Plz Sir help me.My ckt is working before relay.But I cant find proper relay that I can connect the ac signal so kindly send me a proper relay no.

arifuddin said...

buy a relay and send me the photograph. I will let you know how to use the relay.

Swarnali said...

I have baught JQC3FC(T73)DC12V.i apply a 5v to the original ckt and 12v to relay.but yet the relay doesn't work

hi, please help me to clear out that how a tv remote using IR works technically and what is the application of all component(transistor, resonator, ic) in it. after pressing a key, how all component work step by step. please explain it.

Arti said...

please sir help to solve my problem..

shiv said...

sir,this ckt is getting on only but it is not getting off when remote control is pressed

arifuddin said...

@ shiv and @ Arthi

I think you have got a problem near the TSOP sensor. Check whether the sensor is receiving data. You can keep and LED at the TSOP output and check whether the sensor is working.

Arti said...

sir thanks..

sir i want to know the working at transmitter side means only working of IR remote control..plz explain it plz..

sir, whether a external 5v battery is additionally required for the circuit although the relay source??

harini said...

sir could u tell me please how the circuit operation takes place at the ic cd4017

Hridul Gupta said...

sir, this circuit handles 1 AC household component at a time. I am looking forward to control all the electrical components in a room (a few lights, fan, etc) with the same remote. what modifications should be made? Can u please help me out.

arifuddin said...

@Hr!dUL

You can control only 1 appliance using a single remote. If you have to control more than 1 appliances, see the other circuit in my blog. But you have to use good quality relays if you are planning to run so many appliances.

sir i am starting this project at home so there is no one who help me if you will able to help me so please reply

hi sir is this circuit control more than one circuit.

Sir can i use TSOP1730 ?

roshan said...

sir Plz reply me soon.

arifuddin said...

@Roshan

You can use TSOP 1730 but you should find remote control with the same frequency. But it is difficult to find TV Remotes of that frequency as normal TV remotes work at 38KHz. So, use TSOP1738 receiver.

Hi Sir! I want to design a remote that would monitor all appliances like fan, tv, lights, playrs etc.. any ideas how to start the project ???

Sanjay said...

Hello sir !
I want to design a remote control that would operate all appliances like fan, tv , lights , players etc... give me ideas how to start ?

arifuddin said...

@Sanjay

First and foremost things is that if you want to monitor the status of the device, you need to get info from the device about its status. The same has to be done for all devices.

You can achieve that in 2 ways.

1. You can set your master controls and you can design them such that the status of the devices should as same as the status shown in master device.

2. You can get info from devices. Feedback network is needed for getting information. This becomes complex. But with right and robust design you can do it.

You can control multiple devices easily using a microcontroller. You can get information using RF modules which are costly. If you are comfortable with wiring modules, you can get the status of the device through a wire to the microcontroller.

The circuit becomes easy if you get wires(to know status) from all devices and program the controller. RF modules are costly.

sir can u tell me why only dis ic is used for dis circuit?

sir can u tell me why only dis ic is used for dis circuit?

arifuddin said...

@ Divya

You can use any IC with flip-flop nature. The switching criteria is important. Its been a long time. I didnt remember exactly, but this IC has some 7 to 8 states. Refer the datasheet of the IC. There are many ICs similar to it but the number of states will defer. As we need only 2 states, we can use any of the ICs.

Hello sir ... I have chosen this as my mini project. Inspite of connecting all the components in the same way as in circuit..its not working sir..I have checked all the components. They are working. But the circuit is not working for remote.Even the LED's are not glowing. When I made the supply ON js the bulb is glowing and when I turnoff the supply..the light is going OFF. But for no remote it is working sir. Please say me what may be the problem.. My submission date is getting nearer sir.. Please give me a solution. Please ..

how can we control multiple home appliances at a time using this circuit?

Unknown said...

plzzz provide me pcb layout ....thanxx

samrat said...

ok. i have completed this ckt successfully.the main problem that i have noticed that ir receiver tsop1738 is the main case.so i will advice you to ensure the best tsop1738 and also the purpose of soldering is important to get the desired result from this type of sensitive circuit.
